When did Case start painting tractors Desert Sand and Flambeau Red. I have a line on a two tone Case 4 cyl. with narrow front end the steering bar down the drivers left side. Don't know the year or model. Any info is helpful.
Thanks so much
Tod

The big 400 came out in Desert Sand in 1955, then the 300, big 600 and everything else till they went white.

Thanks for your info..
I've only seen 1 photo all i know so far is its 2 tone with some black stripes along the side of the hood, external steering rod narrow front end. Cool wing like radiator cap.

Sounds like a older model with newer paint job to make it look newer. Many fake two tone lettered series where done this way..

Todd, Don is right, I have seen many pre 1954-55 letter series tractors repainted tutone. Please post the photo and we can help you ID the tractor. Rule of thumb, if you can get the serial number and it starts with a 4 or 5 its painted wrong and the letters on the end of the number will be the model.

I doubt if its a total repaint as it was a working farm tractor and don't think they would of gone with new decals and even the "old Abe" placed back towards the driver. I don't have a way to post a photo on line since I'm holding the photo in my hand and havent gone down to the store to transfer it.
If the 400 was 2 tone in the mid to late 50's Did they have external left side steering? Exhaust on the drivers left, air filter up through the hood, battery high mounted right behind the steering wheel? I know for sure it is not a VAC as it does not have the panels on the side.
If you tell me what else I need to look at I can post it. I thank you for all your help. I really like the Case tractors.. Not all have to be green or red.
Thanks

If you go to tractor photos and do so searches.
Case VAC
Case SC
Case DC
Case LA
Will get most of the Flambeau era.

Case 400 will most likely get you the big 400 and smaller 400D. Hopefully you will see one that looks like your picture. Yes, they were repainted by folks with decals. Some leftovers were painted by dealers which they shouldn't have done. Flambeau tractors should be Flambeau!

Tod,
With the BATTERY mt.. behind the steering .. and before the gas tank ....I would think you are looking at a DC model ..

That's what I'm thinking .. have been WRONG ..
See what others say ...

Does it look like this only with tutone paint and narrow front? This is a DC Case, last year made was 1954. After that in 1955 it was replaced by the tutone big 400.

Thanks to all.. With all the help I got today I am thinking I have a DC-3 on my hands. Its a old photo with a cultivator on it and my dad behind the wheel and with all I am learning from everyone and reading everything on this website. The cultivator is painted green so it most likely be a Case as well. I was born in 1960 and on my dads lap must be about 1965.
I remember that tractor like it was yesterday. The thing that throws me off is the 2 color paint. Could it be a mid 50's DC? Did they make a 400 with the steering outside?

Tod,Did it look like this DC with a front mount cultivator and tutone paint job?

Tod, Your dads DC is Most likely a ft Clutcher built in late 1953 or newer .. I am told , Dealers painted Many of these tractors DESERT SUNSET and Flambeau to match the new 400 , The 300 took a while for CASE to birth, and had a long waiting list ( imagine having 12 forward gears and LIVE POWER , that was a tractor WORTH WAITING FOR ) however there were plenty unsold SC available from the factory , ..Story goes Many dealers took delivery and then repainted the 2 tone look for customer appeal.. The SC and VAC models are the most common painted 2 tone , Bacause the 400 was the 1st born, and replaced the DC, The late model DC 2 tones would be Much Rarer . Rumor has it you could still get a new DC (old Stock )from the factory in 1957..

Tod,
Most printers these days have scan capability. It is easy to do. Save as a jpeg. If yours doesn"t, maybe a friend has one. Then you"ll have a backup copy and you can post here.

the name was changed to desert sand when the 70 series came out. also when they changed to power red semi gloss. then sometime later they changed back to desert sunset and power red gloss.

What a confusing forum to get pictures posted. it's either the forum or my computer.-- now it puts the picture two times. Why can't it be simple for a simpliton like me

Jimmy, when you post the pic URL in the "Optional Image URL" box and go to the "review" page you will see one pic. If you continue, post and return to the forum there will be only one pic but if you return to the original post page say to edit or add comments the image URL will automatically duplicate and you will end up with the same 2 images when you go to the review page and post.

To get around that if you return to the post page delete one of the URL's in the Optional Image URL box. The bottom line is, whatever you see on the edit page is what will end up in the post.

To put 2 different images in one post: after you have added the first image URL in the Optional Image URL box click on "upload photo" again and add your 2nd pic URL to the Optional Image URL box the same as you did the 1st pic. On the edit page you should see the 2 different pic ready to post.

BTW that's one beautiful tractor, the desert sunset sheet metal & silver rims really sets it off.
