DC piston problem

Tonight i was tearing into the 40 dc we just brought home and found a chunk of piston skirt in the bottom of the pan. It turns out in the number 4 cylinder the skirt is broken off flush all the way around the piston with the sleeve when the piston is all the way down. Will this cause any problems down the road or should i look for a different set of pistons and sleeves? It has good compression on that cylinder. The tractor will be used for nothing but driving through parades and taking to shows if that makes a difference.

No matter how you plan to use the tractor, that broken piston must be replaced, check the sleeve for scoring. If the sleeve is scored too bad it will have to be replaced too. You don't need to replace all the pistons & sleeves. What size are the pistons? I have some good used 3 7/8" and 4" DC pistons.

you can replace the piston through the hand holes possibly no need to pull head if just for parade. Check with mirror through hand hole with spark plug out. Have done this myself.

Well i pulled that piston out today and this is what it looks like. Basically that bottom half inch broke clean off all around the piston. Luckily the cylinder looks to be saveable, a good honing should take care of it. Anybody know the rod cap torque right off hand?

Heres the pic of the piston next to a good one, you can see a chunk of the skirt on the rod on the bad one.

Just replace the bad piston. If you already have the head off, throw a set of rings at it and a head gasket and a couple hundred bucks later it is as good as new. Far better than a $2000 overhaul for a parade tractor.

that's pretty amazing how that skirt just chunked off like that. I don't think I have ever seen anything like that before. Glad your getting it done reasonable.

Well i got to looking at the sleeve a little more and the honing did not take care of it so it looks like i will have to get a sleeve too. Yah i've never seen anything like this either it is strange.
