6 volt generator voltage

Ok, Still think I have problems with my generator. I stuck a volt meter on it and got fluctuating voltages ranging from 0-11. Typically up to 8.5-9volts. Seems a little too high from what I have read. 7.4 is norm? I'm assuming its fluctuating due to the regulator. I'm assuming its either high charge or low charge. I don't think its a step regulator. I know its charging, the lights are brighter than they used to be. That makes me wonder if the voltage is too high. Will adjusting the 3rd brush change the voltage or just amperage? Remember it charges about 18-20 amps at normal engine speed.

While the digital multimeter may be all the rage, when working on charging systems you got to go back to the old analog meter to see what is really going on. Go to WalMart and get one for about 10 bucks. Those digitals bounce all over the place and never settle down so you can not confidently know what your system is doing.

I would say your field is grounded. Now what generator do you have? I had a customer once who had a piece of Case equipment with B circuit instead of the more common A circuit generator. Have you had the generator off of the tractor and inspected it? Do you have a voltage regulator or do you have a 3 brush, a cut out relay and the rate of charge is controlled by the resistors in the light switch. How about more details?

I have an auto-lite 3 brush generator. Originally the tractor had a resistor light switch and cut out. The cutout went bad (burned contacts) so I upgraded to the regulator. I'm sure it is hooked up correctly, I bypassed the resisitor and used the old field wire to hook up to the load side of the regulator and moved the switch end to the power side for lights. So if its grounded somewhere (ie where it shouldn't be) it must be shorting out inside the case. I have not had the generator off the tractor. I am not really looking forward to disassembling the generator.

thanks for the help. I have photos on a previous post and more indepth explaination.
