CASE VAC steering gear

trying to fix the lousy steering in my VAC-14. The thing steers great off the ground, but set it down and it's 2 hands on the wheel and a lot of creaking and groaning. I know the worm wheel has one chipped tooth and has a lot of free play there. I threw in a spare set from a narrow front tractor and it worked okay but steers backwards. Any suggestions or just replace the worm and gear? Anybody got any for sale?

The chipped tooth may have been caused be bad bearings that
support the steering shaft . Check the balls and race. NLA from
case but a JD H model govenor bearing is the same part. You
also want to check the pressure on the bearing. Plastic shims
were required between the end cover and housing to set the
loading on the race. Also check and grease the steering shaft by
the battery. There should be a zerk fitting there. I cleaned mine
with PB and then regreased when I first got it. The old grease
had hardened up. My .02
