Case DC4 transmission shims

I adjusted the rear chains thinking this may have been my noise problem. I tightened everything up and rotated the wheel and could still hear the roughness. I removed the left brake disc cover, there was 2 shims there. I loosened the bearing hub at the same shaft and the noise was gone when rotating the wheel. Upon removing that bearing hub there were 4 shims. My main question is should all the shims be between the bearing hub and the transmission with none on the other side to the brake cover? With all 6 shims on the inside the noise is much quieter.

You May have fixed that OL noisy Gent then Jeff.. Few fellas on here ever have the need to go to the extent you did, Just dont get problems in that area , Hope you dont have him TOO TITE.. Please know those trannys will build up a little heat and keep your feet warm plowing on a LONG cold day , ....it will be interesting to see other reponses ....

I have never seen shims under the brake cover. The shims to adjust the bearings are seen after the bearing carrier is removed, they are between the bearing carrier and the main housing. You should adjust the sprocket shaft end play to a slight preload. If the sprocket shaft has any end play at all, remove shims till it is all gone and the rotation of the shaft actually tightens slightly when you bolt the carrier housing on. (This is preload). If you have less noise by loosening the bearings (more endplay) you have trouble further in.
