830 Case diesel missing engine

We have a 830 Case case-o-matic 301 engine. Completely overhauled. Had the injectors rebuilt and the pump checked out perfect. Missed on piston 1 and 4. Checked fuel cells as recomended by The next mechanic and they are good. Can anyone tell us what they think might be the next step. Puzzled several mechanics and myself.

try swapping injectors, check valve lash, that is what I would do. That is easy way to see if there might be problem with an injector, and easy if per some chance mistake was made on valve setting, do one at a time, easiest one first

While it is running, loosen the fuel lines on dead cylinders. Is fuel blowing out the fitting when loose? Verify they have compression. I would pull the manifolds and crank it and check each cyl at the ports. Maybe even run it that way and look for smoke at certain holes or strange noises. Check injection pump timing. I have seen engines run with the pump 180 degrees out.

(quoted from post at 21:51:43 01/14/10) Perhaps the compression rings are upside down on a piston ,,SHRUGG... Do You have any BLOW BY while engine is RUNNIN ??. is it hard to start ?
Sure that the piston rings are ok, No blowby and easy to start just misses on the 2 pistons. Think the previous guys thought might be right about timing being out. Thankyou for your thoughts we are really confused about this have overhauled a lot but this one has got myself and a lot of others wondering

remove two injector lines at pump that miss. If fuel leaks out of them you have pump trouble. There are very small copper seats in there an might be worn. Least that was trouble on 1370 while back. Can you feel pulses on lines with your finger?

A compression check will tell the story & where you should look next. A poor valve job or adjustment will give you the same results. Here in our cold climate, I will not grind valves & seats. They get replaced because I want maximum compression.

Hope ya get this one figured out and let US know ND Tractor Guy .. every now and then We get one for the books .... In answer to tEDs respone , i WOULD BET IT WOULD RUN IF THE TIMING WERE OFF SUCH AS THAT ,, my 4020 dEERE will ,, nOT WORTH A HOOT ,, BUT WELL ENUFF TO DRIVE 2 MILES TO A DEISEL MAN THAT COUYLD GET IT FIXED , because i was discouraged and did not think I installed pump 180 out . He and I fixed it in NO TIME !.., My 800 267 Diesel will run Backwards ,, if you stall it with the decompressor then flip the valves on the last revoulution , durn LADY will run backwards blowing oil and exhaust out of the air filter ...

You say the pump checked out perfect. By who, and how was it checked? Those Bosch inline pumps are likely the problem. There is a separate injection pump for each cylinder, and it sounds like a few aren't working right. When you have a rotary distributor type pump is almost impossible to get pump-caused skips on just a few cylinders. But, on a set of inline pumps, it's very common.

As to things like compression, rings, etc.? I doubt it unless you've really got serious problems. I've run diesels with no rings at all on the top piston grooves, and even they did not skip once good and hot. Same with valves ground too deep. They can give a cold skip, but not on a warmed up engine.

Seems you ought check cranking compression, and if adequate look more closely at the fuel system.

I have 730 diesel that that I purshased from a neighbor a few years back. When he would drive by my house it was always mis-fireing.He had several people work on it to solve problem.never could make run right.Left it in barnyard for cows to rub on until engine stuck. That"s when I bought it,freed up engine had injecters and pump checked,Couldn"t make it run without using either(an absolute no no)After learning to time it right, it now runs GREAT -- no misfire
I believe timing was problem all along.timing needs to be exact. Just my thouhts..

Pump and injestors checked out at avery good company. They repaired the injectors and said the pump was set as good or better than he could set it. Today had a diesel mechanic friend over and we pulled head and checked vakves everything seems good. Put head back on reset valve lash and and it now misses on just #4. Warmed it up and took it out and pulled it hard snowblowing and it ran on all 4 now. Really a stumper.
