Cracked block opinion needed

I was removing the oil pan on my 401D and looked up to find a crack in the RH rear of the block, under the starter, from the outside of the block, through the exterior hole and into an oil pan bolt hole. Should I weld it up or just find a different block? I am a certified welder, but that is also structural and if not welded perfect it will crack again! This thing does have an original 251 engine in it and I have not started the overhaul yet, so at least nothing would have to be done twice.

I guess if it was me I would find a block, 251 blocks should be around. But on the other hand if you feel you can weld it and keep it original then I would do that as long as the crack does not go into the coolant or oil galley. With the new welding rods out there you should not have any problem welding it.

50 years ago some blacksmith would have repaired it if possible and it would still be good today but it is hard to say without seeing it in person

I am finishing up putting back together my 1950 SC. It had a cracked block as well. I swapped out a good block from my 47 parts donor. Since the serials are stamped on the block, mine is no longer "numbers matching." I am sure some nit picky a-wipe will complain about that. I am a welder as well, but just didn't want to try to save the old block since I had a handy replacement. My suggestion is determine how much time you want to invest. If you can find a replacement block for a reasonable price, put it in and then later on when you have time you can try repairing the old one. If the repairs go well, you will have a spare or "trading material."

As others have said ,,sounds like You Can repair THAT ONE easy enuff ,, This post caught my eye , I have been around 4 or more cracked engine blocks in my time ,(Froze and busted ), All eventually were successful Motors,,. But believe Me , it is not worth the effort and mental anguish trying to make a silk purse out of a Sows Ear ... But if you are young, and a dreamer ( I once was ), and have come across a frozen busted block , like a GOOD Challenge ,and want to prove someone wrong , Have at It , Who Am I to say YOU CAN"T../

I think I will replace the block for now and same this block for a winter day project, maybe make a power unit out of it or something.

Put a photo up for us to see. It could turn out the crack is insignificant with regards to strength and support.
