C/K steering link problem

I was out plowing today and when I tried to get out of the dead furrow I think the combination of 8 slab weights plus 2 wrap arounds took it's toll and I broke the U-joint in the end of the short tie rod. The knuckle is broken and I was thinking of cutting it off and welding on a new one. Anybody have any ideas? Do you guys think this is a freak thing or it is common?

Never seen that happen before. Just coount yourself lucky thats was what broke not a spindle or axle. Worst yet is them tractor that you catch a tire just right and spins the steering wheel around. Taking your fingers with it.
You could also heat it with teh old cap in place and bend it back into place. Measure the good yoke for the inside width and see how it goes.

Bob, that's what I called you about last night, to see if you had a spare laying around or ever had this problem! The yoke is cracked from bending like that. I thought about straightening it out and welding the cracks, but I don't know how strong it would be after. This thing won't spin the wheel on you with a wide front, the tricycle front end was another story. Other than this had another good day out plowing!

I'd check and make sure your spindles are free, well greased, and if so, go to a machine shop and have it straightened, welded, machined and put in a new U-joint. It should hold for another 40 years,LOL!

Sorry abotu not answering again tonight. Finally got a tractor dropped off that I bought today when you called. I will look around and see if I have one here.
I geuss I am going to that bad place know. I bought a 860 Ford today. I hope it was not that bad of a decission.

Well, I went to the machine shop, AKA my garage, and pressed it flat, welded the cracks, oil quenched it, new not made in china U-joint, and finished plowing the back where the VAC didn't want to go. I think I will get a spare one with the cast end just so this is not a several day fix if there is a next time. Bob, a FORD???? Found On Ranch Dead? Why didn't you find a nice 411B? Ford??? Yuck!
