Case 970 Agri King power shift trouble

I just purchased a Case 970 Agri King that may have sat for a while without being used. I purchased it from an estate where the guy who owned it died and his wife did not know anything about the tractor. I have just started to work on the tractor and found that it is hard to shift into some of the gears, But after playing with it a little last night I was able to get it to shift into all of the gears except 4th or road gear, Where should I start trouble shooting, could it be a bent or improperly adjusted linkage? sticking valves, etc. or does this sound like a internal transmission problem? It acts like it drops into 4th gear, but I get nothing.

I have a little newer Case. A 2290 which has a manual transmission. It was offered in a powershift too. Anyway, it might just be the cables that shift the transmission. Take a look in the console by your right hip while sitting in the seat and also look under the cab. Most of the cables go down to the right handside of the transmission. If the tractor sits the cables can easily get hard to move. You can easily remove the cable end from the shift arms on the side of the transmission and then see if the cable moves easily. I had to replace a couple to get my 2290 to shift right. I have never used the PTO and it was bound tight too.
