Case SC Clutch Woes

Well, I was chopping corn stalks with a 5 foot brush hog yesterday behind my '44 Case SC. I got to the far end of the field (naturally) when I quit moving. The clutch won't engage. So I towed it home and removed the inspection plate. I can turn the belt pully with the hand clutch in both positions and can see the shaft turning, so I know the problem is at the clutch. I don't know if I tore out the center of the clutch disk or what. There where no funny sounds before the "incident", and turning the belt pulley make no noise either and it turns pretty easily (clutch in the engaged position and transmission in neutral).

So it's not snapping in and out? You should be able to see what the porblem is if someone operates it while you look through the inspection hole. If you have to take it apart, you might want to find or make you a set of spliting pins to make the job easier.

It is snapping. I was just hoping someone might say something else to look for before the splitting occurs. As far as splitting pins, how would one go about making some?? I don't know what they are supposed to look like.

I think they consist of 2 bolts and nuts approximately 18 inches long. The bolts need to be only slightly smaller than the bolt holes. You take one bolt out on each side of the bell housing and insert them in the bolt holes. Do a search for guy who posts here under the name "Wilson". He makes them to sell.

I am presently in flordia at mayo clinic with other half, will not be in indiana for a time. seems like I did sell a bunch of splitting pins to don livenston for resale. he should have some.make sure whatever you use is cold rolled steel at least as hot roll is too weak. what don l has is cold roll cad. plated with holes for stop bolts to keep tractor from sliding too far (and collapsing on floor) and holes to keep tractor from sliding back while you are working on it. I had one slide together on my hand years ago. Thats when I gor case spects and started making them!! Use 18 inch pins as reg case is 13 and 18 really giver more room to work. just support tractor also with flor jack does not need to be a real heavy jack

You might try turning the clutch adjuster plate a little tighter to see if that helps. Do you know how to do that? I can email you instructions. Can you tell if the ling is still attached to the clutch plate?

I can"t see the clutch plate. Possibly if I unbolt the pressure plate, I might be able to. As far as adjusting the clutch, I don"t have a manual, yet.
