830 Case Engine Binding

I am currently having trouble with an 830. It has a spot where the engine will bind and not turn over, then I'll bump it with the starter to get it to roll over and then it will finally turn and with luck will start. I'm thinking maybe the rings are the culprit here, and are stuck in the lands. The engine does knock like heck when it does start and the knock varies as the RPM is increased and decreased. I thought a main brg or con rod brg could had been the trouble but the noise doesn't come from the bottom end.
Any info would be appreciated, thanks.
p.s. This is a great site.

Dad's 830 LP developed a knock & when we pulled the heads off we found one of the ferrules that are in either the intake or exhaust ports had rusted apart over the years & a piece of it went down in a cylinder, when the engine was running it was getting between the head & the piston causing the knock, when the heads came off there were marks in the top of one piston that looked like someone beat on the piston with a cold chisel. Dad decided to major the engine at that time so we put all new sleeves, pistons, valves & bearings in it since it had many hours on it since 1962. It has not had any unusual engine noise since.
