Doing a fluid change on the old tractor. I know that the rear end is spec`ed to have hydraulic fluid in it. I am thinking of putting a 80w gear oil instead. I just couldn`t see any reason why this wouldn`t be better for the rear end. Any thoughts, gentlemen?

When and if you have a seizure of one of the top gears on the mainshaft, DUE TO thick oil not being able to lubricate it right, you'll then know it was a bad idea. 600+ HP new tractors use the modern day 10W-30 trans/hydraulic fluid and you think you know better than the engineers ????

Thanks for the response! The only problem I was thinking was in extremely cold weather It would be to thick. This rear end has got some fine metal at the bottom of the case, and had some water in it. I wasn`t too worried about 80 w in warmer weather, I doubt this old tractor has anything very tight or close to being in spec. I was just wondering if anyone has tried it
