160 Power Steering Valve

I have a 160 that has a power steering problem. Steering works fine around the yard at low speeds but malfunctions at road speed. I also cannot steer the tractor when it is not running. Shop manual seems to suggest there is something wrong with the steering control valve. Anyone know where I could find a good used one or someone who could work on the valve?

I'm no 160 expert, but on all of the other hundreds of A-C tractors I've worked on, I have NEVER replaced the steering orbitrol. NOT ONE. If there has ever been a steering issue, it is usually wandering and it is more noticeable on the road than in the field. It has always been the steering cylinder leaking internally...... 100% of the time. The other possibility if you have road wander would be the toe-in on the front wheels isn't set at 1/8" to 1/4" at spindle height.

The 160 is kind of an orphan - made in France, etc. After reading your note, I went to the I & T manual and discovered that the 160 steering valve looks very similar to the 170 and 175 valves. I will definitely look into the cylinder for repair, however, I still may have a problem in the valve since there is no steering when the tractor is not running which according to the I&T is caused by a defective check valve within the control valve.

BUT, if the steering cylinder is leaking internally, your orbitrol will never be able to manually steer anyway. Manual steering would be the least of my concerns as long as it will track down the road without wandering all over the place.

If the 160 is in ANY way like the "american" 100 series, it can't be steered without the engine spinning the hydraulic pump ??

DrAllis -you are correct again! I will get to the cylinder asap! Neighbor died and left 85 tractors - mostly AC - and have been
getting as many running as possible so may take me a bit to get back at the 160!
