WC Trans problems

Our 1937 WC runs great but I have almost never been able to find 1st gear.
The shifter is loose and I can get all the other gears. Seems to go into 3rd when ever I try to get 1st.
It also has a lever on the side of the shifter which has a rod that goes down into the trany. It is not loose and doesn't want to move. What is this for?????

I've done everything with tractors (well almost) but not much with transmissions. So if I pull the cover off what is going to jump out at me and will I be able to get it back together?

Any thoughts on 1st gear and how to fix?

Can't help you with the 1st gear problem but, the lever on the side of the shifter is a reverse lock out. To put it in reverse, you should have to pull the lever towards the shift knob.

Inside the tranny, the first gear rail is the center one. Like other poster said, the lever on the shifter must be moved to get to reverse. When pulled, the shift lever will go all the way to the right, then pull it down for reverse. By opening up and lifting the shift tower, nothing should fall out, unless something is broken in there. The reverse rail is on the left inside the tranny.

I can get reverse with no problem so this must mean the small lever must be froze in the pulled position.
Correct?

I've got a few of these. As long as you can shift into reverse, the small lever is not an issue. As far as first,
what works on mine is to shift in down into 2nd, then go straight up into first. Usually works for me.
