1939 wc transmission

I am trying to put the shift tower back on the transmission for my 39 wc. i've lubed up the shift rods and been trying to figure out what position the gears in the transmission housing are suppose to be when in neutral.
my shift lever seems as if it has no physical connection to the forks or the shift lugs.
the transmission was full of water and froze, and I had to repair the cracked housing. I had the transmission out of tractor and had took the tower off, and now i need to put it back together. (the tractor has set for 20 years) and i know that the kids were up on it trying to "shift" it when playing on it in winters past so i don't know, and i cannot see anything that is broken.
any suggestion will be appreciated! thank you

Set the tower to the neutral position, set the tower alongside of the transmission, and it should be apparent where the gears have to be for the forks to engage the collars.

okay got transmission in neutral , cant get shift tower to engage either fork

well lost a detent ball messing around
but trying to move the shift rods around shows that they are pretty froze up with rust, really hard to get them to move out of detent position, gonna oil them up and see if I can get them to move easier, cant see anything broken

If you occasionally replace ball bearings, save the balls. Get a collection of various sizes, and perhaps one might be the right size for a detent ball.

thank you!

I've got the shift rods taken out to clean up all the rust that I am thinking is causing my problems.
now I am trying to put the shift rods back in but having a hellva time trying to hold the detent ball in to slide the shift rods back in... any help? thanks in advance!

I used a long narrow straight blade screwdriver to hold down the spring and detent ball, while pushing on the opposite end, accessed from the expansion plug holes.
used up my reserve of patience but got it done ...thanks!
if your reading this make sure you have the interlock plugs and the interlock pin in place.

As long as we are on this subject our 37 WC has been almost impossible to get into 1st gear. I found it a couple times but usually goes into 3rd when you are aiming for 1st.
We haven't had the guts to take the cover off to look at things.
If we have it nuetral and pull the cover will anything pop out making it tough to go back on?
The shift lever is super loose and wonders all over and the little doohicky thing on the side of the main lever is stuck tight.
Any ideas on why 1st gear is tough to get?
Also, what is the little lever running up the side of the main shift shaft for????

from my experience i would venture a guess that the little doohicky you speak of is your "reverse latch" it's at the top of your shift lever?
take a look at this link, dont worry about sign in just click view books, then next type in WC and search for transmission(or in the future "whatever")

this latch will cause you problems shifting if it isnt in the right position, the latch has a spring to hold the latch in position for shifting into forward gears, perhaps there is as much rust and smegma in the shift rails as mine. I'm hoping cleaning cures my shifting problems ...we will see in next day or so.

taking off the cover will not cause you any headaches, unless its making a new gasket to replace, patience is key!
do you have a manual for your beauty?
message back with questions ill try ti help where i can!
good luck!
