D17 generator problem

my son tried to jump my D17 battery to start the tractor but reversed the polarity. The tractor has neg ground. Now the generator won't charge. If I flash the generator will that make it charge or did reversing the jumper cables burn something out?

thanks for any help.

Certainly polarizing the generator is the easiest thing to do. But, I imagine your voltage regulator is buried in there under the gas tank. Trouble could be there also. I would try polarizing the generator, but would be ready to unhook the battery in a hurry if the ammeter should show a major discharge after shut down.

A friend nearly lost his D15II when the VR apparently stuck, and he didn't notice it upon shut down. Generator, and the wires going to it fried. I've made it a habit to watch the ammeter on shut down.

Do you have a neg ground genny? Most are positive ground. Not going to hurt anything trying to flash the regulator.

Some regulators are specified to be positive ground, some negative ground and some either. You "flash" or polarize the generator, not the regulator. The generator can be polarized for either ground configuration. I think it is confusing because polarizing instructions often say to make the contacts at the regulator. It can be done anywhere that is connected to hot battery post on one end and generator armature on the other. (This is on the Delco and other Type A systems. Ford type B is done differently)
