Hydraulics D-17

Hydraulics on series 1 d-17 is leaking into the power director. Is this the hose in the back or do you have to split the tractor to fix? Thanks

Sitting in the seat, there are two dipsticks. The one to the right of the gearshift is the transmission/differential. If the lift arms hose or cylinder packing is leaking, that dipstick will gain oil and the hydraulics (right side underneath the gas tank) will lose oil. If the dipstick to the LEFT of the gearshift is gaining oil, that is the Power Director. Technically, to fix it is a huge job. The seals on the clutch shaft are leaking, requiring a split and maybe a double split, to disassemble the entire torque tube. My cheap fix would be this:.. drain the Power Director and hydraulic sumps. Refill the Power Director with 2 gallons of HyTran/universal type trans/hydraulic oil. Take the dipstick to the Power Director and remove the cotter pin and check ball from inside the hollow tube and throw them away. Try to fill the tube and any small holes with RTV silicone and the vent hole on the top too. I want this PLUGGED so it cannot vent anymore. Then, use the same oil and fill your hydraulic sump with 2 1/2 gallons. Use it like that and see if the hydraulic sump won't stay full. If you lose upwards of a gallon, that is OK. It just migrated into the Power Director area, but should eventually stop. This is what the series 3 and 4 tractors were like. One BIG compartment with no clutch shaft seals to ever go bad. If this doesn't work, you can drop the hydraulic sump and remove a freeze plug from inside to help level things out. Try the easy way first. Be sure to tighten the P.D. dipstick with a wrench and get it tight to seal it up good. Should be a copper gasket at the top to help seal it.
