Can anyone tell me if the metal tab on the coil of the mag, should be jumping fire to the mounting plate that the points are attached to. My point quit firing just all of a sudden. When I had the cover off so I could check the points, that was when I noticed the coil jumping fire to the plate. Also what is the best and easiest way to check the mag coil? Thanks

If that is the closest path to ground, it is where it will jump. How long is the spark? If it jumps 1/4 inch or more, coil is fine.

Messing around with a mag without it being connected to spark plugs, or "spark gaps" on a test bench is NEVER a good idea.

Apparently, you have the "distributor cap" off, and are playing with it, and the spark from the coil is finding a path to ground. LUCKY, 'cause otherwise it would be trying to punch through the insulation in the coil to "find" a ground.
