Late B and C have the same motor????

A friend of mine has a late "B" his Father bought new. He just discovered that it was stored with straight water in it. The block is busted/cracked in several places. He want to get the tractor running but does not want to break the bank doing it. Just a weekend yard/garden/hobby tractor when done. I think his simplest step would be to find a good running "C" motor and just switch it. He has looked around and the "B" motors he is finding are early ones that are different.

AM I correct in thinking that the "C" motor would bolt right in his tractor????

Yes B and C engines are the same. I have 1 or 2 used blocks laying around from my 2 parts Cs. I know one of them is sort of bad due to a hole that has been patched and the other one I think is still good. I have a lot of parts around from those Cs including cast iron valve cover and oil pan

As soon as the "C" tractor came out, I believe all the engines had C stamped into them. The only difference that I know of being, a little larger bore. If your friends is a late B, the block serial number probably starts with a C. Could even have a factory distributor.

The very early B's could be missing the bosses where the generator bolts on, and the serial number could be around on the back end of the engine, where it was nearly impossible to read. But I doubt you'd be finding anything that early.

I'd bet that B has the later "CE" engine in it from new. As stated, when the C came out, they went from the BE to the CE engine. Bill Deppe in Maquoketa would have what you need.

No difference in the B, C, CA or RC blocks and heads after the B's had a factory generator. Also the early combine engines. Early B's and combines had 3 1/4" bore and the C had the 3 3/8" bore. A lot of the B engines you would find now will have the 3 3/8" piston upgrade. The new over bore kits for all are 3 7/16" bore. The difference in HP was due to the stronger governor springs and pistons that came to the top of the deck. All took the same O D sleeves. All had a 3.5 stroke. All had the same valves.

Forgot!

The CA block was tapped in the front to fasten the front end fast with 5/8" to 1/2" stepped studs. The B and C was tapped for 1/2" studs.
