Restore 1942 Allis Chalmers C Hydraulic Problem

I restored (with some help) a 1942 Allis Chalmers C. Engine was stuck but now all gone through. However, I cannot get the hydraulics to work.

I first got the tractor running two years ago and put it up for sale as a parade tractor, but it has not sold. I kind of gave up on the hydraulics since it probably will not a working tractor again.

However, I am beginning to think about troubleshooting it again. Any trouble shooting tips for getting the hydraulics on a 1942 Allis Chalmers C working? Does it have to be primed or anything? I do have the parts and service manuals. Thanks in advance.

Oil level as it should be and the correct type and weight of oil?? Oil back then was a 20W oil now days UTF is fine. If you have the thick 90W oil in that could be the problem. Or the control is not working as it should and not moving the hyd valve.

Thanks and I will do some troubleshooting tomorrow. I think the oil is okay, but I will double check the level and what I put into it. Do not remember offhand.

These are very easy to remove and work on. I recall foreign particles in the ball seats that work as valves, I also recall a seat being out of round on one and cleaning it up. I imagine you could
also have a broken spring one of the valves. Someone else had mentioned recently that the pickup tube can get clogged.

I'd pull it off and see if it works manually when you pump it by hand. I believe I was able to put the tube in oil to prime mine (been many years) and check out it's operation on the bench so getting to the bottom of a problem with them is easier than you'd think.

(quoted from post at 01:44:48 06/27/18) Thanks It will be a few days before I get back to it and I will let everyone know how it worked out.

Folks, I got busy with other tractors and other things and I am finally getting back to the Allis Chalmers C. As I wrote earlier, the hydraulics do not work. I started it today and ran the PTO and pulled the hydraulic lever and nothing.

I do have a service manual. It says something about priming it when it is off the tractor, which I did not do. Is this necessary or can it be primed on the tractor? Also, one manuals says, "After running pump for a few minutes bleed the system at ram packing nut with control in the raised position. And what and where is the ram packing nut? Is that the nut at the end of the hydraulic cylinder?

I am not much of mechanic and have let this tractor and the problem sit too long. The engine has been completely overhauled and new tires and paint. I see that I have leak around the belt pulley. I know I put in a new seal there but it is leaking again. Any help appreciated.

It is the nut at the end of the ram. Also look at your control lever where it goes into the pump. Kind of like a butterfly with a spring loaded position. There is a small pin that connects the two pieces together and it can shear. if you look close and actuate the lever and look closely you should be able to tell if the shaft that goes into the pump is actually rotating. Might just need a new pin. Simple fix. That is if its the same design as a B model.
