delco dist timing

As with anything, initial timing can't be set much more than a handful of degrees,BTDC for starting (literally zero, if hand-cranked) and "running advance" is determined by the combination of weights and springs and advance limit stops in the distributor, so you really can't change running advance a whole lot from what the distributor is set up for, unless you are capable of "recurving the advance".

Thumb over #1 plug hole till air rushes past. That gets you on the compression stroke, then get to TDC of that stroke. Line up the rotor with a lug on the cap. Apply plug wires in firing order in the direction of rotation.

Thanks for the info. Couldn't remember which line to use on flywheel. CRS from old age I guess.

Once you get #1 at TDC, if you turn the distributor counter clock wise until the points just start to open, timing will be very close- assuming your advance is working correctly. Then with it running, and a timing light, you can set the advance timing wide open, and you should be able to see the timing retard as you slow the engine down.
