D 19 Repower

Have been working on a D19 gas for the estate of a friend. It appears that the engine is bad and needs overhaul. Looking through my parts catalogs, it seems like parts are not readily available for these engines. It seems like a tractor of the D19 size should have a diesel engine instead! Would a diesel motor from a D17 or D19 bolt right in place or the gas engine? Someone has mentioned that the engine from the D19 was also used in some Gleaner combines. Which model Gleaner would that be? There were probably more Gleaner combines built with that engine than D 19 tractors!

Other than a repower, it would seem that the tractor will end up in a salvage yard which seems a shame. It would make a good loader tractor for someone if a loader could be found! Any thoughts on the value of a D19?

I have a gas 262 out of a C Gleaner in my D19,also I know that some people have put 301 diesels in them too. What part of the country are you located I have several spare engines
so I'd be interested in the D19 if not too far and you all aren't going to fix it.Would hate to see it scrapped.

I always thought that the 301 diesel would make a nice fit for a D-19, that 262 gas was a pretty good motor though!

Located 60 miles north of Milwaukee. Going to do a compression test, etc to confirm condition of engine and then decide what is next. Tractor runs but smokes excessively. Has been inside all its life but has not been run for 4 or 5 years.

You cannot realistically overhaul the engine or swap it for another engine and ever hope to come out even on the deal. Sell it as-is. Unless there is something really special about it (like NEW rear rubber), it isn't worth only $1500 to $3000 tops anyway if it was running.

That's what I always heard that the buda 262 gas was the better option that the diesel, the diesels get expensive to work on.

Since it has set so long I would put marvel mystery oil in cylinders (or maybe ATF) and let it soak for several days then after the engine runs a while to limber up good put it on a load and work it hard. The rings may be stuck. I've had a 19 LP since 1978 and still love it. It was my #2 tractor for about 8 years.

Sleeves and pistons are a tough pull right now but last I knew Norm Mienert Davis ILL had some kits. If you search that name he has a web site.

The D19 gas overhaul kits dried up a couple years ago. Still A few around but you wont find one easily.

Thanks! I talk to Norm all the time about other AC parts! I am making some progress - the D19 has 150 psi compression on all 6 cylinders- now looking for what else can cause white smoke! The late friend has a collection of over 85 tractors, all but 10 are AC's so I have lots to work on!
