WD45 Gear Whine

on WD 45's is there a common cause for a bad gear whine or possibly a bad bearing in the rear end. New to me tractor I did not notice the noise when I bought it but when working on it I drained the trans/rearend oil and it had a fair amount of water in it I had the top of the tranny off to fix the shifter and put fresh 90wt back in it and now it has a loud whine or noise that you can hear in all gears although the higher the gear and faster you go it gets worse possibly a bearing running dry? Could I see anything if I took the back cover off the rearend or will I have to completly disassemble it. Any thoughts? Thanks
 
Most likely it's nothing. These all tend to whine. Some more than others. The WD's were even worse. I have a 185 which is similar and it whines quite a bit going down the road.
 
I think it depend on tractor and how much wear in gears. My 54 WD45 trans./rear end runs quite. I run Lucas 80-90 gear oil in mine and change it every several years.

Yea this is way beyond a normal gear whine like something is running dry. I have a WD
That is real quite that I am using for a comparison.
But my WD is a fairly low houred (I know it?s history)Tractor where as the 45 I would guess is a very high houred Tractor
 
You just bought this tractor ???? I'm going to guess that sometime in the past, the rear end has been run very low on oil and the pinion (ring and pinion) bearings have locked up. The previous owner let it cool off, filled it with oil and got it to break loose and viola !! now it moves, but it is very noisy. If you removed the shift cover again you might be able to determine if the pinion bearing is worn/loose by grabbing ahold of the top rear gear and seeing if you can move the top shaft up/down/forward/backwards. There could be a bad lower countershaft bearing, but it should only be noisy in 1st-2nd and 3rd gears and quieter in 4th gear. You could reach around the top gears and see if the lower shaft can be moved around like it has a bad bearing.
 
Ok Thank You. Sounds like pinion bearings then as it is a lot worse in
4th gear then the other gears. But I will check everything when I have
it apart.
