WC Voltage Regulator

I was asked to check an overcharge problem on a WC. I found this regulator installed which is marked 12 V. But the tractor has a 6 V battery. Has anyone seen this type of regulator on a WC? Obviously the regulator voltage is wrong and I'll install a 6 V regulator. I didn't make any voltage measurements as yet. The problem was that the ammeter was showing charge all the way to the plus side of the meter and the operator saw water being boiled out of the battery. Thanks for your comments.

Someone thought a regulator is a regulator. They are not. A three relay regulator is considered a little more sensitive than a 2 relay device. The one on the left is the cutout that disconnects the gen from the battery when the gen voltage is less than the battery voltage. It also latches the gen to the battery when the gen voltage is higher than the battery. The center relay is a current sensitive field control that limits generator output by reducing the field magnetism, reducing output. The right hand relay is voltage control. It is wired in series with the center one to limit output voltage. This action sets the output voltage for charging the battery. Use the voltage regulator specified for the generator number on the tractor. It may have been changed from original. Jim

Maybe a "P.O." converted it to 12 Volts, and later a 6 Volt battery was inadvertently installed???

Some even believe in doing a 12 Volt conversion just by installing a 12 Volt reg and working the snot out of a 6 Volt generator.

Bob,

Your first statement is very likely correct as I checked the gen and it is plainly marked "12 Volts".
