Help installing a new muffler on a WD?

Mostly just curious if this muffler is the right one for this manifold? It's a Stanley AC-4. The tractor is a WD but I know a few different manifolds would bolt onto these things, and wasn't sure if they all had the same size exhaust hole?

The old one rotted out (badly). Am I supposed to just force fit this thing down in there (and install the bolt in the front)? It seems a bit snug. Or am I supposed to compress the tip a bit first? This is my first muffler install.

Also, I should note I had a devil of a time getting the old muffler out.... Or rather, the 6 inch piece of it that was left after the rest rusted/broke off.

Any assistance is appreciated.

That's definitely a WD manifold, as opposed to a later one. And it looks to be in unusually good shape. I can't answer your question directly. I would measure the two diameters carefully with calipers. If they're more than 1/16 of an inch different, I don't think it will go. It would be a shame to bust that nice original manifold trying to force in a will fit muffler.

Did you get kit that goes with a Stanley muffler? Top photo is stanley with kit and bottom photo is original mount WD muffler which is still
gotten through Nelson Global.

I found some more photos. The top one is how a Stanley is mounted on a WC,WD,and WD45. The bottom is how the original fits on a WD or
WD45(photo shows using one bolt but you should use 2 bolts).

If you use that muffler you stand a chance of getting water in the motor. I had 1 like that and got water in
the motor. It needs the flange that goes over the manifold to keep it out.

If you use the original style muffler rain can't get in. Nelson global and Tony's Tractor Parts of Oregon have them.

(quoted from post at 17:21:51 06/03/18) His original WD manifold doesn't have two holes.
True....and the A-C style Nelson muffler was introduced with the WD-45 Ser. #WD-17786 and was, according to A-C, designed to fit both the WD and WD-45. Hence the two holes. The lower hole is not used on a WD as there was no bolt hole at that location.

The "Original" A-C muffler for the WD and early WD-45s was more like the one shown with the clamp on it.
The clamp was a little more complex to fit the early WD; it utilized the bolts that attach the cover plate as there was no hole at the top.

Here are pictures of two different WD manifolds and a WD-45 style manifold.
Having said all this, I agree the WD-45 style Nelson is the very best way to go, albeit a little pricey.

Bob Bancroft -- Awesome, thanks. Interesting, since it is on a transition year tractor (WD with the curved shifter).

D beatty -- Just got the muffler, no kit. Didn't even realize those brackets existed. Also, I see Simply Filter has them but says "2-3 weeks to deliver" which means they are special order. I'd love to get my hands on 2 brand new Nelsons. Are these new old stock, or do they still make them? I see some other site says they've modded Sparex mufflers to fit like the old Walkers.

hd6gtom -- The old Stanley lasted about 20 years? Literally rusted/split out the base.

My other tractor has an original Nelson that was already crazy old and used hard when I got it 25 years ago. It is just now nearing the end (rusting out through the sides).

Brian G. NY -- Dang, those are some neat manifolds. The top one with the plate, I remember grandpa's old '48 WD having that. Shame that tractor is gone (traded off as a parts tractor to a guy that restores Allis probably 10-15 years ago).

Thanks guys; I think I will plan to stick with the Stanley for now, until I can get my hands on two new Nelson mufflers, for once I get around to properly fixing up both the old irons.

I bought a old stock Nelson last year for my WD45 and it cost about $160.00.I have been pulling my WD45 and modified a Stanley and
slipped a 3 1/2 stainless steel pipe over it.
