1955 WD45 both rear tires jacked up off the floor rotate tires about 1/8 forward or 1/8 back ward they get stuck like some one put on the break. the trans in nuteral ,doesn't matter if hand clutch is all the way forward or back same thing dry tire no fluid can't see where that would matter. doesn't matter if motor is running same thing. is it subpose to be like that ????

That can be caused by many things. A bit of brake drag or a ruff bearing. I have seen that on a few of my tractor and they have done that for years and not likely to be a problem unless you cannot push past the drag area or it cause problem with using the tractor

(quoted from post at 11:25:03 05/15/18) If both tires are off the ground it sounds like differential locked up. ***** If both tires are off the ground and the transmission is in any gear with the hand clutch pulled back, one tire should rotate forward and the other backwards. Neither tire rotates would be a differential problem, BUT even at that, with the transmission in neutral, they should both go forwards or backwards together if the diff is stuck. It sounds like someone has run it low on transmission oil and the pinion bearings are locked up and also damaged the differential and they left it in the weeds years ago. Now, you bought it and want us to guess what happened??? Take 8 bolts out of the cover over the differential and remove it. I'll bet no oil runs out.

The effort to turn a differential from the tires should require some force due to the gears involved. The term 1/8 needs clarification. Is it 1/8 turn, or inch o? one quarter turn (from turning backwards to turning forwards) is way too much without the other tire turning the opposite direction. Jim

no, you should be able to jack up one tire and turn the tire with about 10 lbs. of pressure to spin the spiders in the diff. i do that regularly on my w4 when i park it back in the garage till i get time to fix dripping valve stems.
whAts the story here??? happen at once , or try moving in gear? tractor sitting long?
