I'm putting my dad's old Allis Chalmers d17 Tractor up for sale. I don't know what year it is, possibly 1959. It starts easily and runs great. It has new tires with snow chains.
The serial numbers is 224692. If anyone can tell me how to find the year and value of this tractor I'd appreciate it.

Serial number is located underneath the air cleaner cup, stamped into the bell housing casting. It will read D17 XXXXX. Whatever you have for a s/n isn't it. S/n 16,500 was the first D17 in 1959. S/n 28,200 was the first one in the 1960 build. I assume it has working power steering?? The loader has bucket cylinders, but where is the hydraulic pump?? If it is just ahead of the grille screen, that is a big deal because it is "LIVE" and works whenever the engine is running. A good running tractor with excellent rubber, power steering, wide-front and an all-hydraulic 2-way loader would easily bring $3500 or more where I come from. Whether it's a 1957 or a 1962 model has little to no bearing on it's selling value. It gets down to condition and features.

The way I would sell it is like an on-line auction. I would park it in a location where it can be seen by many with a sign with pertinent information. You have to get at least two people interested for this to work. You could start like this: Tractor to be sold as-is by June 16th, 2018 at 12 noon to the highest bidder. Bidding begins at $1500. From there, you collect names, addresses and cell phone numbers. You choose the end Date and starting $$$$ figure. These are just a suggestion. As you get close to the end time (you want it on a Sat or Sun at noon) the phone calls will get busy to those who are really interested. I've sold a house and two tractors like this and never had any issue and never paid anyone a commission. You are the Auctioneer and have to be in charge and don't let anyone try and push you around. Just refuse their bid if they become a jerk. Do not offer ANY kind of guarantee or warranty. "As-is" means just that.
