Freeze plug

Started mowing for the first time with my B after the first round it started smoking from around the engine and the engine was getting hot. Pulled valve cover and found the center freeze plug had popped out. What would cause that??

Well the B is a non pressurized cooling system so a blocked vent can cause that or simple old age can cause that. Unless of course you just install it and if that is the case it was installed wrong. But I am figuring it has been in that engine for years and it has been year then old age etc.

I have found evidence that the engine may have frozen this past winter, as the thermostat housing is cracked and leaks, not sure about radiator yet.

Very unfortunate. Not sure what I'd do in that case, but I might be tempted to try the cheapest path first, put a new housing on (or TIG weld it if it's not deformed), new freeze plug, radiator tested, and run it to see if you still get coolant in the oil sump. Worst case, you'll have to tear down and go for a magnaflux of the block. It might be a waste of money on gaskets, but it might be a good sign that you saw no leaks in the block itself.

Normally the block will crack behind the carburetor before any core plugs pop out. The ones I tore down that was cracked behind the carburetor had all the core plugs in place. The long large area in the water jacket where the cast is not all that thick and more water volume will crack the easiest of any place on about any engine. Strange situation!
