The bolts that hold the muffler to the manifold have broken off. My usual technique would be to weld a nut to the broken bold. My concern is that when welding I will be putting a lot of heat in a small area , any chance the casting might break?

I've done it many times with no problems. Weld a washer on let it cool to the point you can touch it then weld on a nut. Done that on my B and C heads where the thermostat bolts break and that area is thin

No I'd still do it the same way other then the fact being the manifold it will be tougher to get it to free up. I would pour some ATF on it before welding and then after welding but not when it is super hot but yet still warm
