Steam Engine

Did not know that Allis Chalmers made steam engines. Was watching a program on the Louisville water works which was established back before the Civil War. They have preserved allot of the older equipment used back in the 1800's and one of the buildings houses an Allis Chalmers Steam engine that was used to pump water thru the system. Now on display for tourist etc.

Farm equipment was a very small portion of AC business. They made their mark in the 1800s with steam engines, water turbines (Hoover Dam, etc), mining equipment, rock crushers, grinders, electrical generators, etc. Check out The AC Story, by C. H. Wendel.

You should see the one they have at Midwest Old Threshers. If memory served it pumped something like 11 million gallons of water a day in Marshalltown, IA. Massive.

The paper mill that I retired from had Allis Chalmers water turbines, installed in 1907, they are still running, the paper mill is gone! They originally generated electricity with 4 and ground wood into pulp with 9, now they all generate electricity.

About the only thing they didn't make was steam traction engines. There are several large AC steam engine in Iowa.
