Painting a WD

Pretty much the whole tractor was painted !! Later on with WD-45's the generator might have been black as were the headlites, but old WD's were all ORANGE including the steering wheel. You would be better served to worry about getting the CORRECT color of orange paint (Persian orange #1) and the correct color hood decals (blue up to about 1950 and black from then on). Bolt heads & nuts were painted orange when the rest of the tractor got painted.

Thank you for your help

I used stainless steel bolts and stainless washers so I don't mess paint up if I have to take hood off.

The correct paint color and the correct decals for a WD-45 !!!! It still makes me almost puke when someone spends the money for incorrect paint color and incorrect decals.

Which would have the blue letters with the big "A" and "S" and nothing that designates it as a "WD".

Just curious, when did Allis put the model designation on the side of the rad. ? Was it not until the WD45 came out or did the late WDs have it? I know some decal companies got creative and made decals for the sides of the unstyled WC. Thanks, Harry

Life's too short to worry about the color of a tractor.
I think it's really boring looking at the same color all the time.
I painted a few Mopar Ice Blue, and one was Tequila Sunrise Vitamin C.
That one was cool!!!
It change colors when the sunlight changed.

I know when the hood decals went to black letters with the "A" and the "S" the same size as the other letters, the model "WD" decal was placed on the side of the grille shell like the WD-45. I know the 53 models were like that and I think maybe back to 1951 ?? I'll bet Lyle Wacker (Osmund Nebraska ?) decals would know.

The WD that I grew up on was a '47 or '48?? It had black letters and a large A & S. It had WD on the side of the grill, and it did not have a snap coupler. Dad bought a cultivator, 2-16 mounted plow and a mounted corn picker. The corn picker came a few years later. It also had a push button switch and magneto.

1948 was the first year of the WD. In fact, there were 48 WC's. That tractor had been repainted. Big A and S with blue letters and no sign of a "WD" decal designation is correct.

100% in agreement with you Doc
If some wants to make a farce of a tractor go for it. but the sad thing I see is there is a lot of ppl who don't even know the proper AC colors so the ones painted properly are actually the minority/conversation pieces

Are you saying its not correct paint and decals. If it was then most of the WD45s were painted the wrong color at the Gathering of The Orange 2015.

Not sure who you are referring to by your question. I see a couple different shades of orange in the pictures. The sun and aging makes some difference. Different brands of paint are NOT the correct color, even tho they may claim to be P.O.#1. I use PPG and feel it is about as good as it gets for correctness. I can't tell the decal colors, but the big A and S are to be blue. The small A and S are always black. The year of change from blue to black was sometime in 1950 or 51 I think. A "WD" never had a WD decal if decals were blue. That's how it was when they were built. It's a free country (yet) and anyone can paint and decal their tractor however they want. I just figure spend the same $$$$$ and get the correct paint/decals. Resale value down the road just might be better.

Yes is is s free country but those that mock restoring tractors properly make no sense.
Rod(NH) was kind enough to post the difference in another thread .

I am a little late here. Dad bought a new WD in 51 and I was seven years old. There was never the WD letters on the side of the rad.

Looks pretty legit to me. Small "A" and "S" that were black and then the "WD" designation. I don't think one will ever find a serial number break in the parts book as to when they went from old blue decals to these the newer ones.

According to Steiner's tractor parts when ordering decals for WD that WD's before June of 51 had no WD decal on side if grill and if made after June of 51 it would have.

(quoted from post at 14:27:02 01/27/18) the PPG 60080 is #1 Persian Orange
I grew up with these tractors and remember when the D-series came out and seeing the new tractors at the dealership being the new Redish Orange. We realized what #1 Persian was even on faded tractors.
A few years ago at the "Gathering of the Orange" at Mount Pleasant, Ia one of the most serious Allis-Chalmers exibitors told me the back rims were to be painted a special Grey. I knew they were Galvanized since our original rims still had signs of being Galvanized. He was pretty sure about the grey and showed me a nice picture to prove his point which was grey??? Moved on and did not argue but experience has some advantages.cleddy

I painted my WD45 Corporate orange. It was the only color the AC
dealer carried. Fine with me I like the brighter color much
better than Persian orange. If someone doesn't like it they can
shove it up their pooper.

Of course there may be "exceptions"....apparently somewhere along the line, some WDs had the same size A and S in their lettering as did the WD-45.
I'm guessing that later WDs may have had that style lettering....maybe?
Well, at least the 100,000th one off the line had that style lettering according to a picture on page 78 of "the Bible" ....Norm Swinford's book.
