Finally took the hood off and retorqued the head bolts. Moving on to investigating the reason why this takes so long to heat up. After taking thermostat out and removing the gasket that seals inside the housing I could make out the temp of 140. Now I know why it never got very warm yet it was working correctly. My question is this. What should be the correct temp thermostat. 1951 B. Running with a 140 I noticed a slight milky layer along some of the inside of valve cover. I have no water in oil and no evidence of anti freeze anywhere but I suspect this engine is not running hot enough and this could be causing condensation. Is my assumption correct? Should I try a 160 or a 180. This is mostly a parade tractor but I want to start working the gal a little bit. Thanks for the input.
 
Old would you happen to know if anyone sells the original style long thermostat in that temp that is the right diameter.
 
If I remember right I took my old thermostat into O'Reilly's and they where able to order me the correct one for my C which is the same as your B
 
We don't have ORiellys here in NY but I'll try some of the other suppliers and see what gives. Thanks
 
Have you looked in the parts area of this site??? they DO NOT LIST A 180 BUT THE YDO LIST A 160. Also if you have not taken the old one out yet be careful the bolts love to snap off so you then have to do things to get them out BTDT too many times. A NAPA store should also be able to get you one
 
No problem with the bolts. I did look at the parts on this site as well the long 160 degree stat that they list is 1.5 and change diameter. The one installed is 1inch 7/8. I could perhaps make a part to make it fit. Looking for something original. Don't want it to slop around up there in the hole with just a spring holding it. If it slides to far to one side it might bypass.

Thanks I will have to give them a call. They had nothing locally. Can't understand why something like this is not available. Oh well.
 
In the past for a 2 bit part like a thermostat I have had my Agco dealer send me the part by way of UPS. Ya it cost me an extra $5 or so but it saved me a 80 mile round trip and the dealer has been there for more then 38 years now and was an A/C dealer before they where an Agco
 
All the parts venders I have checked do not have the correct size to fit my housing. However just on a hunch I called Napa and they had one in stock. Yippee.

Well low and behold it was not the original. It was an aftermarket kit that is shown on every web site. My spring again was to small a diameter to hold it up so I cut a length of spring from an old grease gun and it did the trick. Sorry to get your hopes up.
