What are the differences between the G138 engine and the G149 engine. How did Allis Chalmers get the extra cubic inches of displacement.

That makes sense but just for the heck of it, how did Case get so much different horsepower from their 188D cu in engine when they put it with same quoted capacity in their 430 (40 odd HP) 530 (52 HP) and 630 (60 something HP) Tractors? RPM seem to be within yelling distance of each other, and none of them smoke (if tuned right). Or have I missed something??? I do have a 530 and 630.

I've wondered about that too, must be more than stepped up RPMs. Maybe different cam grinds to get so much more hp. ?? Could you take your 430 to the dealer and ask to have it tweaked to a 630?? Glad you brought that up, Harry

The tractors are in New Zealand and I am retired in Australia. What is behind the engines is a lot heavier in each increasing tractor size. The RPM between the 530 and 630 is close. Don't know about 430.

Specs for the Case tractors are thus: 430 is 34 HP @1750 RPM and uses 2.0 GPH fuel...........530 is 41 HP @ 1900 RPM and use 2.5 GPH fuel.........630 is 48 HP @ 2000 RPM and uses 3.3 GPH of fuel. All info is from the official Nebraska Test Data sheets

As about any tractor puller can tell you RPM can make a big difference in HP.And as the Case stats show HP can vary greatly depending on RPM the tractor is running, two different brand 50 HP tractors running at Max. RPM might have very different HP outputs at 1/2 throttle.

Thanks, Dr Allis. I guess those figures are true enough, and I presume they are drawbar power. I do wonder, though, about the fuel consumption. I used my 530 for four years driving a New Holland 33 (5 foot cut) double chop forage harvester on grass silage and fuel consumption was always comfortably under 2 gallons (Imperial measurement. = about 11/8th US gal) That was driving the engine at full losd constantly with 2 or 3 trailers/trucks collecting so it had no breaks between loads. On lighter work mostly with New Holland 78 and 280 balers, a gallon per hour was normal, never more. They were PTO driven so full PTO revs and on hilly land. Anyway a great tractor, son still
has it and was replaced with 830 and other son has it too.
