We are working on my FIL's old D17 series IV. Right front wheel had all kind of play. First the wheel bearings fell apart in our hands when we removed the hub. Replaced all that - now the spindle its self seems to have a lot play. The book only shows some bushings and I'm sure these are completely worn out. What is the best way to get the steering arm off so you can slide the spindle down out of the shaft? We pulled the snap ring off and I cautioned by son about just beating on it with a hammer until we had an idea on the correct way to get it apart.
Or do you buy a big hammer and start swinging?
