What is the correct rim size for a WD-45? 12"x28" or 13"x28"

Why would some have 12" and some have 13" rims?

Some WD45's came with smaller tires, with the smaller rims.

They isn't some had 10 and some had 11 rims. They originally had either 11-28 or 12-28 on them depends on how they were ordered. There were also three different final drives they could have had. All sub to the heavy duty now.

12 inch tire/rim was standard. 13 inch tire/rim was oversize. That is old size marking. Today"s 13 inch tire is a 14.9, measured at the bulge of the tire, not at the rim.

Dads came from the dealer with 12" rims. I measured them when I put the new tires on them.

It is very hard to prove but, I don't think there was ever a 13 inch rim on a WD-45 from the factory. 12 inch, yes. AGCO parts doesn't always call out what the width is. I have a set of 13's from a series 4 D-17, so I'm thinking it would have been RARE if never on a WD-45.

Forgot to mention, I have a spring of 1957 WD-45 that had factory 14.9 x 28 rear tires and they were definitely on a 12 inch wide rear rim.

I'm thinking the parts book shows both I'll have to look when I get home. Old sizing is a myth. I have two 11-36 off a jda outback. Measure out exactly the same as the 11.2r36 I just sold a customer for his b.

According to AGCO the WD used a 70220011 rear rim. Now, I know there was a 10 inch and 11 inch for a WD and they only show one size, so I imagine it is the 11 inch width which probably replaces the 10 inch. One size for the WD45 and that is 70226270 and I suppose it is 12 inch like my 1957 WD45 tractor was. The older D-17's show 70252439 which must be 13 inch and this 70252439 carries up thru the 170 for a 14.9 and 16.9 X 28 tire. The 70253174 rim is 15 inch for the 18.4 X 28 tire.

My 175 has 18.4 tires on 16" rims. All 180's I've seen have had 18.4 tires on 16" rims. Series IV D17's here had 18.4 tires on a narrower rim, I don't know how much narrower, as I never measured one.

AC, and maybe others, weren't all that fussy about a certain size tire on a certain rim. So there may be some confusion as to what was original, versus recommended tire/rim combinations from tire manufacturer. AC also made a lot of running changes, without necessarily letting us know!

There is the general rule of thumb that a wheel should be two in narrower than the tire. From what I've seen of people modifying things and changing things around over the years you can deviate from that rather considerably and not really have negative effects.

My Dad bought a WD-45 in 1957. He had a choice of rims and tires and bought the 13 inch rims with the 13-28 tires (old sizing) The new sizing was 14.9 on the 13 inch rim.

And there you have it !!! We cannot prove it by the parts book that there was ever a 13 inch rim for a WD45 and then someone says there was such a thing. So the lesson here is this: there were rims of 10, 11, 12 and 13 inch and you might find any of them on a WD or WD45 tractor. Also, rim width is measured with the tire removed and on the inside of the bead shoulder, not the outside.

Well no matter what size rims and brand of tires, what you really need is some cast iron weights, some neighbor of mine had Allis's they had huge factory cast weight's that stuck out from the tire about 3-4 inches, and i am sure they had fluid also. They plowed with a 4-14 John Deere pull type plow, and plowed down sweetclover,this is in the late 50's. They didn't spin out, and that sweetclover was 5 foot tall, think of the green manure, them tires had to bite thru.

My WD45 has the 14.9x 28's Firestones on 13" rims and weighs 6,000 lbs. it always spins out but never runs out of power ( farmstock 15.5x28 max).

According to Tractor Data the 12" rim was the only offering for the WD45. The D17 had the 12" and 13" rims.

You didn't read far enough in Tractor Data because if you go into dimensions it says 12-28 and 13-28.
