I chanced on a D21 that is only a mile from me and has been parked in the woods for quite some years. According to the owner, and I have no reason to doubt him, it was running when he parked it. He said he bets it will start with new batteries. The sheet metal looks undamaged and seem to have no rust.. The tires aren't anything to write home about, as you might expect. It has an aftermarket cab on it that lacks some glass but I would remove it anyway. At least that part of the tractor has been more-or-less out of the weather. Is it worth $10,000, even if stuck?

In my mind I don't think anything that is sitting in the woods is worth $10,000. I'm guessing there is a reason it got parked there (that isn't motor related) as a lot of times things "ran when parked". I usually take the stance not running means its scrap price as who knows what it is once you get it running. If the person that has it cares about value have them get it running.
 
Was the exhaust covered. If not you probably have water damage(maybe serious) in there. If it was covered and it will run and move it may be worth something like that , but I would proceed cautiously. I agree with the other post. If the guy is able he needs to start it and get it ready for sale. The fact that it's so close to you is a real positive as you can keep up on it's progress or lack thereof.
 
$10,000 sounds high for that tractor in field ready condition. I agree, few big horses were parked in the grove without a major problem. Price it as a parts tractor, with poor tires around $1,500? If the current owner wants more, he will supply the batteries and get it running. If you supply the batteries and it starts, you won't have much negotiating power left. If you work on it and something breaks or an engine bearing seizes, will you be stuck buying it at the asking price because you did something to break it?
 
Is it a Series I or Series II? Does it have 3pt and/or PTO? Probably not worth 10K but a D21 has way over scrap value in the shape you describe at any rate.Check the oil and see if
it has antifreeze in it.
 
Checking the oil is also a good idea.
The fellow didn't put it up for sale. I just happened to see it in the woods when I drove in looking for him, and asked him if he would sell and what he would take for it.
It is a Series II and has both the three point and a pto.
I do know that restored D21's can bring $25,000, although I would not sell it.
 
If there's any traces of water in the fuel I'd be surprised after setting a few years if it starts. I've had injection pumps in for repair that only sat one year that had several critical parts stuck inside, no fuel delivery to the injectors at all with the lines loose.
 
I hope to find out pretty soon. I sure would like to buy this tractor but I don't want to look at another $10,000 (if not more) to have it serviceable.
 
I love the ?running when parked? phrase. I?d be walking away unless you can get for scrap price.
 
Sounds like a good prospect to me,I'd definitely be looking at it seriously as that is a very collectable tractor.It'd be good if the owner could supply you with a little more information on why it was parked.Sometimes things are just parked for small reasons,I bought an Oliver 1550 diesel out of the woods in NC a couple years ago owner said they didn't use it any more and didn't want to buy batteries and had a fuel issue.I got it changed filters and pulled it about 50ft it fired right up and ran good.I'm in Virginia also so if you do decide not to get it I'd be interested.
 
You apparently don't know much about D 21 tractors the PTO and 3pt is worth a WHOLE lot more than scrap price for that tractor.That tractor is worth a good amount even if it didn't have a motor. How many D 21's have you bought for scrap price?
 
Bought one that was running, during restoration took the plate off of the rear end and found the pinon gear in very bad condition. A lot of these tractors have been turned up so drive train issues (such as the clutch and bull gears) may be a problem also.
 
I always loved the logic an non running tractor is scrap price. On such thing as a tractor being worth only scrap price. A dismantler will out bid scrap. The engine is the easiest part of the machine to repair so look at everything else and see what you got. If you can reap a service manual you can overhaul the thing for about 3k. And if anyone has ever bought a d21 field ready for 10k you stole it.
 
$1100 for a good used ring and pinon out of a 220 and a little over $600 for for some bearings and installation.
 
Any complete non running D-21 with stuck engine and junk tires is worth at the very least $4,000-6,000
plus....A decent one that runs and drives is worth $8,000-$12,000,and a nicely restored is $20,000 plus..
Maybe 20 years ago you could get one for $1500-2500 but not now...They arent plentiful and are very
sought after..
 
I agree on the value. I might be better off saving my pennies and looking for a restored one, but if that tractor close to me will run, I am going to have a hard time passing it by. If it won't run, coming to a value the owner will accept will be the obstacle. I only chanced on the tractor, as I said before. He had made no effort to sell it.
