WC Tongue/Drawbar Weight

What kind of tongue weight would be
acceptable on a WC. Their drawbars
aren't built near as stout as more
modern tractors seeing how most
trailers in that time had little to no
tongue weight (four wheel wagons, etc)
and implements were light. Would 1-2
ton in a pickup bed trailer be too
heavy for the drawbar bracketry?

I would definitely not put 2 tons of tongue weight on that drawbar, according to the book for my CaseIH 4210 which is a 75 hp tractor from the mid 90s, they say max 2000lbs drawbar vertical load. And that's got a drawbar that's about 1 3/4" thick I believe, I know most of my clevises etc won't fit it.

You're talking about different things. I wouldn't put 2 tons of weight on the drawbar. Two tons on a trailer hooked to the drawbar no big deal.

I broke a mounting bolt on mine with a 540 IH poo spreader filled waaayyyy too full with wet poo. It was to the point that dropping the clutch would pull the front wheels off the ground. Now I load that heavy, but keep my aftermarket hitch slid all the way in.

Are you talking about the tongue weight or the weight of the trailer? A thousand or two pounds on the drawbar of a 4000lb. tractor sounds like a recipe for a disaster. Sorry to be so blunt, Harry

I'm talking about the tongue weight of the trailer when loading 2 ton of gravel/firewood/etc on a trailer.

If you load 4,000 lb on a four wheel wagon with steerable running gear as was common back then, there is 0 tongue weight transferred to the tractor, i.e.: the trailer bears the entire load. If you load that same 4,000 lbs on a two wheel trailer such as a pickup bed trailer, flat deck trailer or manure spreader, a percentage of that weight is going to be transferred onto the drawbar of the tractor as a downward force (tongue weight).

Depending on location of axle of trailer Your not going to be put 4,000 lbs on drawbar. If you have a pickup truck weigh truck on scales with trailer hooked to truck but not on scales and then load trailer with 4,000lbs and weigh the truck trailer way you did before and that will give you an idea how much tongue weight that trailer has.

All depends on axle placement, I built this trailer specifically to keep weight on the tractor for braking and traction, works well and have hauled 5 ton of crushed stone easily but I keep the drawbar short. Wouldn't try it with a lesser drawbar or a normal length drawbar.

If you think it is to light weight for much of a load then Deere probably did as well. So for their tractor spreaders they built a re enforcing hitch for all models they thought needed it. Co to their parts lookup site and look for model R spreader and you will find several pages of just hitch supports for all popular tractors that would need it at that time and the AC would be in that group.
