190 question

Are there any other engines that will bolt in on a 190 gas? Maybe from a combine? Would go to diesel if possible. A friend has a 190 he is thinking about scrapping because of a bad engine and I'm wondering if a replacement would be possible. Lots of gleaner combines in my local salvage yard so there should be some engines available.

Yes, it can be done, but it is a lot more work than most people are willing to go thru. So many things are different on the combine engine. You have to tear apart both engines to transfer over multiple parts and assemblies, depending on exactly what year of combine engine you find. Things like the rear plate and flywheel, front plate and front cover, sometimes the camshaft, oil pan and oil pump. Diesel engines have a different starter and ring gear. The only Gleaner with a gas engine similar to yours is from an early model "G". For a veteran mechanic, it's no big deal. For a novice, it's a big deal.

Similar, but different! - I switched a JD 2520 gas tractor to diesel, and we put a Cummins 8.3 truck engine in my CaseIH 1660 combine to replace the original 8.3, which ventilated itself. Just as the Dr days, lots of things to switch over, but it can be done.

Here, most of the M series Gleaners had the 301 engine, which is what your friend would need. Most L series here had the 426.

Aside from switching things, do they bolt it? I wouldn't be interested in fanning plates and such. Maybe a motor mount or som ething.

(quoted from post at 10:04:07 10/11/17) Aside from switching things, do they bolt it? I wouldn't be interested in fanning plates and such. Maybe a motor mount or som ething. They CAN be bolted in, but will not be functional without other changes. None of the combine engines even have a place for the hydraulic pump to attach to the left front corner of the engine. So, if you are good with no hydraulics, then fine, you are good to go. Some of the oil pans are too deep and the front axle won't roll back into place, etc, etc, etc. You'd want the diesel engine from a model F or G or M or M2 combine to even be close to fitting.

That puts it out of the question then.
Thanks for the info! With jd, IH, and some
of the Perkins it is fairly easy. Was
hoping that was the case here.

A Gleaner "G" engine is the 301 diesel. I have installed two in XT 190 tractors. They where diesels to start with. Nothing hard about the switch. On the gas motors I would not know.
