Bull Gear Oil Change - AC Model C

Saw a post suggesting to change the bull gear oil in order to quiet a gear-whine.

I'm new to tractors and only had my 1942 C for about a month. I plan to change all the fluids, but am not aware of how to change the bull gear fluid.

Where will I find the drain plug(s) and where is the filler plug?

Thanks much.

No drain plug you have to drop them to empty them. as for a fill plug there should be one towards the top. It is small but that is where you fill them from. I use the newer 85W-140 in my Cs

Thanks much. Makes sense. Mine work fine with no noise, so I am just going to add 85/140 until the level reaches the bottom of the fill plug openings.

Regarding another fluid, in checking the shared transmission/PTO fluid I found the fluid to be golden in color - clearly not the 20W motor oil the Allis manual says to use. I am guessing that a previous owner has filled it with Hytrans or some other modern tractor fluid designed for shared sump systems.

Are you familiar with such fluid that is golden in color?

I am considering not draining and refilling the 7 quarts because the fluid looks clean, and everything works quietly and as smoothly as it can given the design and age. Your thoughts?

Thanks much.

I use the common 303UTF type fluid in my C which has the same PTO/Hyd system as the B has. As for color it is sort like a dark honey color

Perfect. Thank you.

My 42 C dual wheel tricycle has the original 6 volt electric start with original 2 lights front and 1 rear, & foot brakes. She starts right up, either with electric start or hand crank. Runs well, so not planning to do anything to her other thna change certain fluids and top the trans & bull gear fluids.

My son and I plan to drive her in parades, about 10 miles to get there, 90 minutes at parade pace, then 10 miles to drive her back home. Any tips about driving such distances on this 75 year old tractor? Anything special need to be done to get her ready?

Also, the magneto kill switch in the dashbox has no knob. On line I found a plain black knob the same size and shape as the Lights knob that is to the left of the magento kill switch. Did the magento kill switch originally have a plain black bakelite/plastic knob on it?

Also, do you know where I can view any photos of Cs either factory original or restored to factory specs.? I want to make mine original.

Thanks again.

Look in the tractor photo area of this site and you should be able to find a good many photos of what your tractor should look like
