I am going to look at a allis chalmers wd45 tomorrow with a loader. It?s in nice condition with good tires. I am a JI Case guy so I don?t know much about them. Is there any thing you guys know about them that I might not. Thank You.

Just know that when you push in the foot clutch, everything stops, that's including the PTO and hyd. pump. Hand clutch stops ground travel while other functions continue.

The hand clutch should have a good snap over center. If not, it can be adjusted after taking off the battery box and clutch cover. WD45 has 3 discs in the hand clutch, (WD has 2) and like the WD, shims are removed to tighten the clutch. Brakes are a band type, and easy to adjust after removing covers.

Get on the tractor and see if the seating position bothers you. It's offset to the right of the steering wheel, too far to the right to comfortably put your left foot on the footrest, hard to get on and off the tractor. At least my WD is that way.

I really like the WD45's I have and have had 4 in total still have 2. That said they do have short comings. Seating position has been mentioned but I am comfortable and I stand 6'4". I don't consider it any more or less difficult to get on or off of. Loader may make a difference here.

Power steering has also been mentioned and I will DEFINITELY back that one up. One of the ones we had, had a belly mower, we ran it without for maybe a year and added a charlynn unit and I would never have one without. Wouldn't even think of running one on a loader without powersteering.

Now to my main concern for a WD45 on loader duty. If it is using the factory hydraulics and factory valve you will be disapointed IMO. The HOLD function on that setup is only a mere suggestion, it will either creep up or down. If it us using the factory hydraulics with a add on valve it will work better but the loader needs to be one for a Allis tractor of this era. They used a high pressure low volume set up and a standard cylinder will move painfully slow and if it reaches it's limit of travel will have a tendancy to fail due to the higher pressure.

Hope you had good luck.

I have to go along with you on the WD and WD 45 are hard to get on and off and the location of seat. I have found that putting the seat
flip hinge on then that it moves the seat to left several inches. I also made a bracket and moved seat back several inches and that helps
some.

I did a pile of loader work with my WD and didn't have power steering. It is nice to have, but as long as you are moving while steering it isn't too bad. I did every from dirt work to loading manure to moving large round bales and never had any trouble. I will agree with the others on the hand clutch and hyd limitations.

If the hold position creeps then you either don't have pump set up right or the plates are sticking.

I am 6'4" tall 226 lbs. and of all the farm tractors I have drove the Wd 45 is the hardest to get off and on and the roughest tractor I have driven from that period of time.

If you have ever run a full hydraulic loader you will be highly disappointed. Great to lift and move things but as said slow and with no downward pressure control not so good. Plenty of power, power steering is a great extra. Depends what you are going to do with it.

With a loader on it you will need both hands on the steering wheel and operate the hand clutch with the toe of your right foot.

I have two WD45s with WD 9 loaders on them. If your moving up from a shovel even a trip bucket loader is a huge improvement. If your moving down from a all hydraulic loader on a power steering equipped tractor you'll be hard pressed to like it. I'm 6' 270 lbs and have added the seat flip hinges to both it moves the stea a few inches to the center and back. The positioning isn't to bad unless your climbing on and off a lot. With a full bucket your not going to steer unless your moving. I usually start turning before raising the bucket off the ground before backing out of the pile. The nice thing about the loader is I can remove the loader or put it back on by me self in 15 minutes. Just drop the parking legs down unhook the hyd hoses put a pioneer coupling on both hoses. Pull the pins drop the cylinders and back out. This frees up the tractor for other uses. For a dedicated loader tractor that your going to be using all the time I'd look for something else. The WD 45s are at my house and get regularly to move garden dirt clear snow piles move downed trees and lift things to put them in the shed. At the farm I spend several hours a day in a real loader tractor. I wouldn't want to try doing that without power steering, power shift, air ride or air conditioning.

I have a WD45, with a DuAl loader on it. The control valves had to be relocated, to another bracket, so I could comfortably, reach them, and the PTO powered pump, is fed from an in frame resivour. The WFE is a bear to turn, (perhaps a NFE, would turn easier). fortunately the loader has down pressure, and I can cock the wheels some, before picking up the load. With the hand clutch being on the right side, it would be better if I had 3 arms.

I have a trip bucket loader on mine and leave it on all the time. I also have a back blade and have had to work around a few things as you can imagine. When using the loader it's not too bad after you get used to using the hand clutch but is a pain to turn when not moving. I cut a 10 inch piece of angle iron and drilled some holes in it to wire to the cylinder when not using the loader. That keeps it off the ground and not always either creeping up or down. Using a back blade is a huge issue... one hand on the wheel, one hand on the control lever and one hand on the clutch, you do the math. I don't farm but have 10 acres and my Allis is my work tractor, brush hog, fire wood helper and just moving big stuff. 6' 4" 240 and have no problem getting on or off.
In her younger years (and mine) she was the only tractor on our 180 acre farm.
