Electrical Problem

I am having a problem with my electronic ignition on my 1955 WD-45. I installed it about 3 years ago. It has worked fine until about a month ago. I talked with the person at Pertronix and I tested the unit. It failed so I ordered a new one. I install it a
week ago and now it has failed. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
I also have to disconnect my battery when I am not using the tractor. If I leave it hooked up it drains the battery. I have a converted 12v system.

The best way to fix the electronic ignition is to switch it back to points. I have tractors that still have the same point in them that where there 10 years ago and the y run just fine.
As for the battery drain to 2 could be related and the alternator has something wrong where it stays excited and that in turn draws the battery down and could also be feeding the ignition module and causing it to burn out.

I try to help if and when I can and if I see you post again with more question I'll try to help you more

What ever you do you need to solve the cause of the battery draining, ie bad battery, bad ignition switch, messed up wiring as it will not go away just switching back to points and may be the cause of pertronics going bad.

I'm with Ted. Things that were working and now don't need the source for the problem found. Figure out the battery drain and I would almost guess your Pertronix will be fixed as well.

You say it's converted to 12 volt but didn't say if it's 12 volt genny or 12 volt alt. If it is a 12 volt alternator you could have a bad diode in it which will drain battery in several days. You might want to check your ignition switch to see if it is totally shutting off. I know if switch is left on and tractor not running it will ruin the electronic unit.

Good place to start is pull the alternator off and take it to an auto parts store and have it tested. It is done for free in all the ones I know of. That will tell you if it is good or bad. If bad replace it if good then time to start pulling one wire at a time and use a test light and see where the drain is

Alternator check at auto supply will not alway pick up a bad diode. I have had several alt. tested and tested good but would discharge battery. An alternator can have a bad diode and still charge battery but discharge battery when not in use.

Yes that is true but it is as good starting point. That is sort of like a starter I had tested last week. It checked good but the funny part was it did not spin. It might try but then stop so while it tested good and was in fact bad

There was a Diode that came with the used conversion kit. It is on the negative wire. Is that the right place for it or does it need to be on the positive side?
Thanks for all your help. I did get the tractor running. I changed out the battery cables and found a loose wire on the ignition switch.
