I have a D17 that says series iv on the tank and was told it was a 1967. I looked for the VIN number and found it on the left side it says d17-43331. This vin says it's a 1963 series 3. Any help here?

The tank or decal could have easily been changed. Serial/Vin numbers do not lie. Have you compared a series 3 to a series 4? Others will know better than me but if I remember correctly the series 4 has factory 3 point hitch with no snap coupler. I want to say that a series 4 D17 also has a curved shift handle versus straight but I may be confusing this a smaller D series tractor.

A Series IV will have a hyd pump on the right side, where the belt pulley would be located on other D17s. It provides for independent hyd, not just live like the earlier versions. Stickers can be changed easily.

A series 3 (and older) have two levers to the left of the steering wheel for hydraulic controls. The series 4 D-17 has 4 or 5 levers on a neat console alongside the right side of the seat. The 3 point hitch on a series 4 was an OPTION with the snap-coupler design still standard equipment. In all my years of repairing them, I'd say about 40% were 3 point hitches. The series 4 D-17 gas was the best overall and reliable tractor that A-C ever built.

There are stickers that say snap
coupler on the rear axle. The controls
are near the steering wheel. 2 on the
left. One of them is hydraulic control
the other is something to do with
plowing. The throttle control is on
the right.
