I picked up the fall issue of the Classic Trains Magazine while I was in Tractor Supply the outer day. In
it on page 80 is an article about a passenger rail car owned by Allis Chalmers. I didn't know they owned
1. Sort of an interesting article, but looked like a giant waste of funds to me.

when their engineers were pricing out an building a railroad car for the executives to ride in,

the company would have been better served, if they had been working hard developing a 3 pt hitch system for their tractors and live pto

they made a good tough hard working tractor, it just needed live pto and 3 pt hitch to stay current in a ever changing tractor market.

they lost out as they did not stay current,

By the time that happened the at market was a tiny portion of all is Chalmers. They were making industrial motors nuclear boils ect.

It is called "ADVERTISMENT" Advertisment does not "COST" it "PAYS"

Try running a business without it.

Dick L the picture in the magazine has no AC advertisement on it,thus no value as advertising.

It would still fall under travel or advertisement. No different than a company jet today used to sell more product. Even smaller companies have company planes now that gives them advantage in sales over those companies that don't. Luxury sells. Sales people that make sales calls in a luxury vehicle and better dressed have an advantage over those that don't. Same back then as it is now. And it is all deductible from gross sales.

I'll have to get a copy of the Magazine.

I knew AC owned several special Freight Cars-you have to remember that AC made a lot of stuff for big industry-Transformers, Mining equipment, etc. They owned their own freight cars as it was good business-better control of the availability when it comes time to ship some big item, among other advantages. See Link to photos of the ACMX 400.

Without seeing the article, and the passenger car in question, it is also possible the car was bought for use with the large freight cars-had to have somewhere for the company rep to ride with the shipment, and with the cost of some of the items being shipped, and the overall size of those items, a company rep had to travel with it to make sure it got there without damage.

Just a thought that no one else offered.
