w d is leaking oil under valve cover gasket. lots of posts where folks have had trouble replacing gasket and still getting oil leak.
what is your best way to stick new gasket in place with out leaking?

After you get the valve cover off and cleaned up, measure the width. Often they are over tightened, and spread out in the middle. I put them in a vise and keep tightening and measuring until they are the same width from end to end.
I then set the cover up-side-down, in the vise. I stick the gasket to the cover with silicone, making sure to pull it out to the edge. Then I have something smooth, and flat, like a board, to lay on the gasket. Then I'll add weight to the board.
I don't use any sealant when placing the cover on the head. Just snug the nuts.

I like to use a fairly thin coat of black rtv sealer and don't over tighten the pan nuts. Just bring them down to where you can see a little pressure on the gasket. Let it set for atleast 24 hours then tighten about another quarter turn. Be sure your pan is not bent before you install.

I use a type of sealer to glue the gasket to the cover and never put anything between the gasket and the head. I make sure it is set up or dry before placing it on the head. Never had leak problems. As stated never over tighten the hold down nuts and as stated if sometime the nuts were over tightened the top will be bent down. If not repaired you will have uneven force on the gasket.

Most of the valve covers after 60+ years are warped slightly and
want lay down completely on the gasket.

You have to use a sealer on the gaskets. Sometimes it helps to
use two gaskets. A lot of the new gaskets are thinner than the
originals.

We put two gaskets on dad's Ford 4000.

Back in the day when 2- WD were the life of the farm operation it seems every winter or maybe every other year one or both would get a fresh overhaul(maybe valves & rings & Rod bearings) when we put gaskets on we would put sealant on the cover(Permatex Form-A-Gasket) and then fasten the gasket on the tacky cover with little c-clips made out of small wire. After the cover was placed on the engine & snugged down the little clips were pulled out with a pliers. We did that on oil pans and any gasket that needed a little help keeping in place. Usually 24 hours waiting time wasn't an option. I grew up thinking that everyone did it that way but hearing all the methods maybe not.

Not sure why my Dad did it but often he would take the valve cover off and adjust the tappets by sound with the engine running after it warmed up even though we had them close to spec's with feeler gauges ? A kid learned a lot of things back in the "day" and maybe some weren't all correct. Cursing was right at the top of the list.Cleddy
