Allis WD45 Hydraulics

Hi all. Me and my grandpa have a 1954 Allis WD45 gas burner that I just recently started trying to move hay with. When I go to pick the lift up, it starts making a kind of rattling noise. It also constantly sinks down, not the lever, but the lift. I can constantly hear the rattle because it's constantly trying to keep the lift up. I was wondering if this was just the nature of the beast, or if there was something we could do to change this. Thanks in advance, Chris.

The "lift" means what ??? The LIFT ARMS on the tractor?? or the hydraulic cylinder on whatever you are trying to lift?? Sounds like an oil leak causing the pump to continue to pump to make up for the leak. Whens the last time the hydraulic pump was used on this tractor?? Might be time for a pump rebuild ?? That tractor is supposed to use high pressure hydraulic cylinders you know...3000 psi at least.

Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that this tractor has an
aftermarket 3 point conversion. Those are the lift arms that are
drifting down. However, something I noticed is that on a
hydraulic cylinder, the lift drifts UP, not down. We figured out
that if we put more pressure on it (such as a slightly stronger
spring) it fixed that. That lift hasn't been used in over 10 years,
so a rebuild is in order, I just wasn't sure if that was my
problem or not. How does one go about rebuilding the
hydraulic pump on one of these old tractors. Thanks again,
Chris.

Do you have one of these decals on battery box that tell you how to set hydraulics?

For the work you are doing you want to set the pump for "HOLD" position. Placing your hand lever at about half-way will place the pump in the off position and close the hold valve. Screw "A" has to fit into a little pocket/divot on the side of the pump to keep the Traction Booster from pumping.
