How difficult is it to swap-out the tachometer drive gear in the back of the alternator? This is on a XT190. Pretty sure our replacement "drive" assembly came with MF
gear and has the wrong tooth count. I can source the correct gear but don't know whats involved with changing it out. Thanks

Interesting. I had seen that drive on a MF, and I thought it was identical to AC. I didn't know there were different gears.
As I recall- there are three screws in the cover. The end one goes into a threaded nut/part of the backing plate. The other two go into the alternator. There is one screw holding the backing plate to the alternator, located under the center of the driven gear. It's a simple repair, as long as the screws cooperate.
Now I'm thinking if the fiber driven gears are different, the metallic drive gear must be different also?

The A/C drive has 12 teeth, the M/F has 18. And you are correct on the fiber gear, A/C has 48 teeth

My experience is with AC. I was surprised when I saw the same tach. drive on a DR generator, on a MF 65. So apparently MF was using it before AC did. I believe AC only ever used it on an alternator.

It would be interesting to know how many different gear combinations there are.

I did a little research, and it appears that all the AC installations were the same gears. I assume originally provided by DR.
