Converted WD to 12V about 10 years ago with special resistor coil. Never had any trouble till this summer coil blew up. Engine was not running. Think I may have left switch on. Replaced coil with resistor type from Ebay. Points melted in a short time. Replaced points, condensor, cap, points melted again in very short time. Wrong coil? Any ideas?

I've never heard of such a thing, but that doesn't necessarily rule out the possibility that it may exist!

In the real world, for a 12 Volt conversion with no ballast resistor, you need a "true" 12 Volt coil, such as a NAPA IC14SB, or equivalent.
 
"Points melted" - while running, or sitting?
Are you somehow getting voltage to the ignition after you shut it off?
Did the 12V change over include an alternator? Is it running away with over voltage?
 
Your first mistake is fleabay. Buy local so you know what your getting from the get go. Good true 12 volt coil will say right on it no external resister needed. Then a good brand of points not TSC China junk
 
Melted while running. What I mean is, it melted the plastic part that touches the cam lobes. Also burned back the contacting surface. These were new points.
 
Thanks everyone for the replies. When I converted it to 12V, the parts man, (old timer whose judgement I respect and trust), told me all points operate on 6V to keep them from burning. Some use an external resistor and some have the resistor in the coil. I bought the one he had and used it for about ten years without trouble. Then one day when I was not around, it blew up. Might have left switch on, not sure. Thought that was what I was getting from Ebay. Could be wrong. Maybe I could add a resistor in series with the coil.
Oh, and to answer someone's question, yes I put an alternator on it. Haven't checked the voltage output. I'll do that tomorrow.
