If the gear in the lower housing is bad, that can be replaced by dropping the housing. If the one in the transmission is bad, then it"s splitting time. Both may be damaged.

The only time a split is required is if the top gear on the hand clutch is damaged. The two lower gears are in the PTO box. The in-between gear is removed by pulling off the hydraulic pump and working out the shaft/gear from there.....no split required if you know how to do it.
