Hello;

Is there a fair way to stop a hydraulic leak on the PTO engagement lever(shaft) on a D-17?
From the parts breakdown, it appears you have to change an o - ring.

I've wondered if anyone has ever figured out a way to remove and re-install the roll pin which holds that assembly together(in by the power director clutch) through the right side cover.

I've done several over the years thru the right side access hole. Made a tool out of 1 1/2" solid square stock about 2 ft long. On one end a 5/16" bolt 2 inches long to use as a punch to drive the pin forward. Change to a longer bolt as the pin is driven partially out. Tool is placed up against the rear wall of the access hole and smacked with a 4 lb hammer. Replace roll pin with a new bolt and locknut using an air ratchet to tighten. Is this easy?? Not terribly easy but better than a split. Takes 2 people to wiggle out the lever to replace the O-ring while one holds the innards in place so the detent spring/ball stays where it should.

I have a tool I made to do this. a small iron goes around shift fork, push pin out with a bolt and 1/4" air ratchet. Works great very simple job. One person and a little patience.You may borrow it if you like.

Hello Sid;

If you would, can you explain the steps leading up to using the tool you mention, as I am new at this.

Thanks for the kind offer , also.

I like to raise the right side of tractor so you can see inside better, First drain oil from hand clutch housing, plug on left side in a small pan, takes 1 1/8 socket. Remove hand clutch lever, remove inspection cover on right side. Tap hand clutch shaft to left a little. Remove snap ring, washer and o ring from left side. Pull shaft out of right side. Shift fork and two keys will fall in bottom. You can get them with hand or magnet. The tool I made will fit over the pto shift lever on the inside, Line up with roll pin and turn bolt in, check to make sure it is in place with a mirror. Then I use a 1/4 inch air ratchet to screw bolt in and remove pin. Outside pto lever can now be removed and o ring replaced. Clean up lever shaft of rust and install o ring. Easy does it putting shift lever back in. Do not I repeat do not take inside shift lever off. You may have to have someone watch and make sure that shift lever stays in place while putting in the outside lever. Put a grade 8 bolt and lock nut in where the pin was. Slide hand clutch shaft in from right side, start fork on and two keys. Make sure fork is engaged in clutch shift collar pins. Slide shaft on to the left side until o ring grove is exposed. Install o ring. Slide shaft to the right a little until you can put o ring on right side. Move shaft back and install washer and snap ring on left side. Put on cover and lever. Drain plug and oil. You are done. Good Luck. You can do it.
