Allis-Chalmers Used on last Homestead in Alaska

Has any one heard the story about the Allis Chalmers C that they rescued from the Last
Homestead in Alaska and it is being moved to Nebraska to be on display as a Historical
site. There is an big Article in the Omaha World Herald today how someone moved there to
homestead in 1974 with a C and a plow & disk and now they lifted it out to move it with a
Helicopter. Interesting cleddy

I don't know.

Seems like there was a fellow on here, maybe even put up a few pictures, who was trying to harvest small grains with an old Gleaner in Alaska. I assume along the coast. Always wanted to know more.

This is quite a story about a Vietnam War veteran from California went to Alaska in 1974 to Homestead Land under the Federal Homestead Act of 1862 where the Government would give Farmers free land if the would live and work it for so many years. Big deal in Nebraska as 45% of the farms started out as Homesteads.

Sounds like this was way far in the wilderness as the guy had to dissasemble the tractor and have it flown inland in 3 trips. Then he moved it to his Homestead in parts on dog sleds and re-assembled it. He used it to try to pull stumps and other steep hill work and eventually replaced it with a small dozer. This guy lasted the 10 required years and is considered the final homesteader. Sounds like farming & Homesteading in Alaska wilderness was not very practical.

They lifted it out of the woods and are going to float it on a barge to Anchorage and truck it to Nebraska where eventually it will be the center piece at Homestead Monument in Beatrice, Nebraska. A great story and it doesn't look to bad for a 1945 "c". They were concerned a Forest Fire might finish it off where it was.cleddy
